Good Morning!
It has been such a long time since i last post an "essay" :P
Well, this post is specially written from my own words and experience for the designers out there.
When i say designers, i mean it in all category; fashion, interior, graphic, games, multimedia everything.
First before i start, I am thankful for all of my clients who have put their trust and faith in me in doing their designs and i am sure all of the other designers out there feel the same because without you, we wont be where we are today and of course, we wont be able to get our income :P
I myself experience being a client and a designer, i understand that as a client, you pay quite a large sums of money and expected the best from a designer but some clients can go a little tiny tad bit over board.
Each designers have their own way of creativity and style, so it is important for every client to check out their portfolio to get the right vibe :P but i will talk in depth about it on my next post :)
Alrighty then so lets jump in to everything!
- The Picky Cheapskates
Ouch! yes i hate using this word but this is the type of clients i encountered the most! especially when i live in a third world country where it is still developing and poverty is everywhere.
Clients like this love to bargain, like in a market, to get the best deal. Oh i know i do that too but i put some consideration in it unlike some clients. What they dont know is, we put EFFORT, THINKING, TIME AND ENERGY to their design making it perfect and well-fitted to their style and personality. We give them free revision, well i do give them free revision, while others only give a few.
They want a GOOD LOW PRICE but expect ALOT IN DESIGN and whats worse, they are very picky when it comes to small details and want them to be perfect. Small details that noone will ever notice and if they do, they dont care!
Have you ever heard the quote " you got what you paid for"? well this applies to this situation for me.
If the clients is nice in a term of not bossy or too much hassle, then i am fine giving them loads of price-cut BUT if they want low price but expect alot, trust me dear readers or designers,
STAY AWAY FROM THEM!
In my own opinion and experience, these types of clients wont bring you any gain but only loss. Loss in the terms of time, energy, and of course income. I seriously think facing these types of clients is best to avoid and not to accept the design.
- The Know-It- All
First, there are times when i am thankful to meet this kind of clients, they know what they want or do but most of the times it is annoying. Why? let me explain to you, They think they know everything and better than us designers, alright, if they think they know better then why dont they do their own designs? These types of clients have the tendency of putting designers down in emotionally, physically and mentally. For them, they are the best and us designers not but seriously, again, why dont they do their own design? Another thing is, if they think they know everything, i am fine if their " knowledge" is right and correct but if not? again, time and energy wasted on something useless. I have a client before like this, these types of clients i think mostly are stubborn and expect us to follow what they want, but they dont know what they are talking about, for example; a client wants a two color combination and for me the two colors doesnt look good together, i told them the reason but they insisted, so i did as they told and apparently they dont like it and went back with my idea. So talk about time saving?
How to deal with these clients? avoid them or if you think you can handle them just be patience, i can handle these clients but patience and timing is needed.
- The Impatience
Some clients need to know that we have other designs to do. I dont know about other designers but i have my own "levels", like usually i will make them pay 50% of the total but some of them pay full, logically speaking, designers will design and put the clients who paid full first right? so if clients pay 50% and there are a few designs that we were handling before them, wanted to be rush, what are you going to do? Truthfully, i am a patience person and these kind of clients is still manage-able for me :) but i hate being rush! every designers know that you cant rush ideas in order to get the perfect one.
how to handle them? my way is to give them an early warning like i can do designs pretty fast within 3 days but that is depending on the amount of designs i am handling and of course when they ask you a date or day for the first submission, you gotta be wise for yourself, so if you say 3 days, can you finish their designs in three days? if you can then tell them that but make sure you finish their design within 3 days, we dont want to upset our clients too right?
- The Sneaky
I think i met quite a few of these types of clients, the sneaky ones where they hire you but run away with your designs. Yes! i met them but thats okay, i believe in karma :) and remember, copycat wont go far in life! haha
Alright, i cant talk much about this but i did face these types of clients before. Once when i was working in a wedding videography company and they fired me with reasons of they cant use my design and well guess what? when we were doing revision, they said oh yes the album looks good! haha i really dont remember the name but it was somewhere near my home. Nevermind with that, i hope they are well now :) and another client that i think ran away with my designs was a client who asked for logo but refused to pay 50% and yes my fault why did i let him do that? yes it is a HIM, a MAN.
How cowardly of you to say you are a GD like me and asked me to do a logo and said that it looks rubbish and you are now missing? VERY MANLY OF YOU ;)
How to avoid them? well this is hard.. haha if only i can read every client's personality :P i guess follow your feelings? i do that, because before dealing, of course you two will talk right? just look at the way that person talk somehow it can reflect his/her personality :)
sorry for my utterly honest post :P but people should know that being a designer isnt easy as it seems especially a freelancing ones, because we are handling everything. EVERY SINGLE LITTLE TINY DETAILS with no help. Well thats me and my life right there :) but i am loving it because i can learn so much better than other who work in a company * no offense darlings *kiss
To my designers friends, i hope these help and i know there are more types of out there that i can name but i wont because i never interfere with them *hopefully really NEVER have to meet them* and i wont write a post about something i never experience before :)
As for the clients who are reading this, please dont take this personally, i am just stating the fact from me and my other designers friend. You can think and put yourself in our shoes or maybe you can even go on a day being a designer and see how it is :)
I hope by doing this post, everyone will come to an understanding and will start to think wisely :)
